LIVE BANDS
OZOMATLI 8:30 - 10:00
Since its inception in 1995, innovation and creativity have defined Ozomatli. Hailing from Las Angeles, the group found a way to represent the city's electric culture through music that appeals to the local community and the world beyond. Ozomatli's success is exemplified in an impressive variety of genres from classic to modern Latino, urban, hip-hop and other world styles. The "Dioses del Baile," or "Gods of Dance," have created one of the most exciting, captivating and flat-out fun live shows touring today. They continue to harness their musical instincts by conceiving new concepts and forging new sounds that keep fans on their toes and the world dancing.
GEORGE PORTER & Runnin’ Pardners 6:30 - 8:00
George Porter, Jr. is best known as the bassist of The Meters, along with Art Neville, Leo Nocentelli and Joseph Zigaboo Modeliste. The group was formed in the mid '60s and came to be recognized as one of the progenitors of funk then called R&B. The Meters disbanded in 1977, but reformed in 1989. Today the original group still plays the occasional reunions but the Funky Meters, of which Porter and Neville are still members, most prominently keeps the spirit alive. Porter's rhythmic work in the Meters in lockstep with drummer Zigaboo Modeliste was epic. Those pockets, the long notes and fat holes, provided the cushion for Leo Nocentelli or Art Neville to play or sing over and created some of R&B history's most memorable grooves.
THE DIRTY DOZEN BRASS BAND 4:45 - 6:00
The Dirty Dozen Brass Band Celebrating over 40 years since their founding in 1977, New Orleans-based Dirty Dozen Brass Band has taken the traditional foundation of brass band music and incorporated it into a blend of genres including Bebop Jazz, Funk and R&B/Soul. This unique sound, described by the band as a ‘musical gumbo,’ has allowed the Dirty Dozen to tour across 5 continents and more than 30 countries, record 12 studio albums and collaborate with a range of artists from Modest Mouse to Widespread Panic to Norah Jones. Forty-plus years later, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band is a world famous music machine whose name is synonymous with genrebending romps and high-octane performances.
DIEGO'S UMBRELLA 3:15 - 4:15
San Francisco’s ambassadors of gypsy rock, Diego’s Umbrella captures California’s cultural multiplicity with enthusiasm, humor and decadence. These urban mariachis have performed more than 1,000 live shows at clubs and festivals across the U.S. and Europe. The band’s lively, unforgettable, heavy-hitting stage show has visually and aurally captivated diverse audiences from all walks of life. Possessing a pop sensibility and punk rock energy somewhere between Gogol Bordello and Muse, Diego’s Umbrella takes explosive melodies, Eastern European grit, Latin flair and anthemic delivery to a wholly unique place.
SPACE HEATER 2:00 - 2:45
We are a Santa Cruz based band with one foot planted firmly in the foundations of funk, while the other foot prefers a galaxy far, far away. While blending the funky sounds inspired by Prince, James Brown and Sharon Jones & the Dapkings, The Heat will likewise take you on a delicious journey careening through cosmic jams, landing you squarely on the dance floor with ecstatic revelers. With expanding oeuvre of sultry original songs and the occasional cover, you won't have much choice but to shake that thang...
